Acne can be such pain in the neck. However, it’s not something that cannot be sorted. There are truck loads of acne skin treatments and care products in the market today. But we can roughly categorize acne skin treatments and care products into 3 broad categories as follows:

* Preventive or general acne skin treatment and care products

* Over-the-counter, specialised acne skin treatments and care products

* On-prescription acne skin treatments and care products.

Preventive or general acne skin treatment and care products

The preventive or general acne skin treatments and care products are the ones that are used as to prevent or minimize acne outbreak and its complications. These measures include cleansers, make-up removers and similar products that help prevent acne. In the real sense, these acne skin treatments and care products are just those that should be part of your daily routine anyway.

However, some of these preventive measures act like acne skin treatments and care product. These acne skin treatments and care products work against the root causes of acne especially by limiting the production of sebum/oil and preventing clogging of skin pores. Basically, these acne skin treatments and care products prevent the oil from getting trapped in pores and hence slow down or hinder the growth of bacteria that lead to acne.

The general acne skin treatments and care products also include exfoliation products like skin peels or scrubs. These skin care products help to remove dead skin cells, and reduce the likelihood of pore-clogging and resulting bacteria development.

Over-the-counter, specialised acne skin treatments and care products

The specialised acne skin treatments and care products that are available over-the-counter i.e. without the need of a prescription, include products like vanishing creams which remove excess oil from the skin.

The majority of these on-the-counter acne skin treatments and care  products are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the have properties to fight off  bacteria and in turn control  acne eruption/infection).

The advice here is to start with a product that has lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide (for example 5%) and observe how your skin responds to it.  Alpha-hydroxy-acid based moisturizers are also popular as non-prescription acne skin treatments and care products. You might have to try a few, before you find the acne skin treatments and care product that is right for you. If nothing seems to work, you should contact a dermatologist.

On-prescription acne skin treatments and care products

The on-prescription acne skin treatments and care products are prescribed by a dermatologist. These products can be in a form of topical preparations that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics and other oral medicines. Dermatologists could also advice a minor surgical procedure to remove the contents of pustules.

Word of advice:  DO NOT attempt to squeeze or do this by yourself, it can lead to permanent harm of your skin.  Hormone-based treatment (since hormonal changes are also known to cause acne) can also be prescribed by your doctor. Such acne skin treatments and care products can be very effective depending on the primary cause of acne on an individual.

There are, of course; diet issues, importance of drinking enough fluids and also alternative therapy of which we will cover in other posts on this acne skin treatments blog.
